Every team has a history and the Barracudas are no exception. Formed in the late 90’s, the team saw challenges as with any first-year programs. However, the Barracudas began to create history when in 1997, Marilyn Stephens-Franklyn arrived to Coral Reef High School to coach the girls basketball team. But, Principal Greg Zawyer had different plans. He took the experience basketball star at Temple University and decided he wanted her to coach the boys’ basketball team instead. Coach Stephens-Franklyn became the first and only female to coach a boys high school basketball team in the state of Florida. She coach at Coral Reef for three seasons from 1998 to 2003.
The Barracudas didn’t win any games that first season and for a few seasons they didn’t celebrate any championships. However, they began to make a push and did reach the Regional Tournament several times. During the 2008-2009 season, they won the District 6A and State Championship under coach Gaston (Chachi) Rodriguez. A. They continue to make a few appearances in the Regional Tournament after that season and in 2013 won the 8A District Championship under present coach Adam Graham.

Coral Reef Wins 8A District 16 Championship
Our Barracuda boys defeated South-Dade to advance to the district championship game and after watching the Homestead win over Southridge during the district semi-final, the Barracudas knew that the championship game for districts was going to be a tough one. The Broncos came out strong and at a fast pace. The game was close during the first two quarters with Homestead leading 26 – 18 at the half. During the second half, the game turn into one NOT for the faint at heart. Coral Reef came out strong in the second half and on a 19 to 9 run tied the game just a few seconds before the end of the fourth quarter and go into Over-time. Thru some good defensive plays the Cudas went on a 6 to 1 run to hold on and win the 8A District 16 Championship for the fourth time in school history.
The Cudas will now prepare for the Regional Tournament and their first hurdle will be South Miami at home this coming Thursday February 11th at 7:00 pm.
